The work largely involves preparing and presenting cases for professional disciplinary hearings, but also requires providing advice on the scope and conduct of disciplinary investigations, including the use of statutory powers, and on a wide range of other issues affecting regulators.

Advocacy typically involves interim and substantive hearings. This includes shorter more straightforward hearings as well as more complex cases such as those involving dishonesty and fraud, sexual misconduct and serious instances of deficient professional performance. Hearings are usually contested and in the majority of cases the respondents are represented, most often by counsel. It is likely that there will also be opportunities to appear in the High Court and the First Tier Tribunal on appeals from decisions of the regulators. Depending on experience, there are likely to be other advocacy opportunities arising from other aspects of the department's work.

The Candidate
A qualified Barrister with, 2+ years' Call, experience in prosecution and, ideally, with professional discipline experience.
Whilst previous experience in the field of regulation and professional discipline is welcome, it is not essential and applications from all relevant disciplines will be considered.  Candidates will however be expected to be able to demonstrate at interview that they are self-motivated and commercially minded, as well as having good interpersonal skills and being able to work effectively in teams.  This is a great opportunity to join a friendly, dynamic and expanding team in a market leading firm with the opportunity to influence and shape the ways the dispute advocacy service evolves moving forwards.
