Head of Compliance & Quality
A Birmingham office of a national law firm has an excellent opportunity for a Head of Compliance & Quality to lead a team of seven people.
The firm provide legal services to private and public organisations across sectors such as housing, healthcare, regulatory and hold a "best companies to work for accreditation".
The Team
The Governance and Risk (G&R) team is responsible for the development and maintenance of effective risk management and compliance standards. Working closely with both legal and business service divisions through heads of division, directors of service and compliance champions across the firm's offices to manage quality, embed risk management, compliance and continuous improvement to aid delivery of an excellent client experience.
G&R's role is to achieve compliance with the requirements of the SRA and the ICO, and to maintain the firm's ISO accreditations. The team has seven members and is split into two teams the Operations Team - dealing with the day to day queries and information security and the Compliance & Quality Team dealing with complex conduct queries, development of policy, managing the firm's insurances/ circumstances and claims and the running of the quality management system.
The Role
This role is to manage and co-ordinate the work of the Compliance & Quality Team (Governance & Risk Executive and Governance & Risk Analyst) which is a proactive team working across the firm to ensure quality and risk management is implemented through policy, procedure, process, risk controls and auditing. The role reports to the Director of Governance & Risk and will form the G&R management team with the G&R Operations Team Leader.
As well as managing the team, the role will involve dealing with:
·Complex compliance issues
·Professional Indemnity and other insurance renewals
·Managing circumstances & claims
·Managing the firm's ISO 9001, to include the audit programme, policy and procedure review and implementing improvements
·Reviewing contracts (suppliers and clients)
·Assisting with tender responses
·Writing papers for committees
Skills Set / Experience
·Experience of working in quality and compliance in the legal sector, preferably within a mid-sized law firm or a solicitor or other legally qualified individual wanting a move in to compliance
·Must be a self-starter, flexible, innovative and adaptive
·Demonstrate a thorough understanding of compliance and be able to articulate how the current compliance 'hot topics' will affect the work of the division
·Detailed knowledge of risks, indemnity insurance and accreditations
·Able to assume responsibility and deal efficiently with a varied and time sensitive workload
·Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with people at all levels of the organisation
·Advanced analytical/problem solving skills

The Role
The Fitness to Practise role will enable the successful Solicitor to oversee a number of paralegals undertaken investigatory work on behalf of Regulators such as the NMC whilst managing an investigatory case load where it is alleged that the registrant's fitness to practise is impaired through misconduct, competence or health issues and preparing those cases for hearings before panels and committees of the relevant regulators.
Working under a Partner the work involves prepare cases for prosecution, interviewing key witnesses, attending conferences with counsel, liaising with defence and presenting cases.
The Candidate 
Previous experience in the field of Fitness to Practise, Regulation and Professional Discipline is strongly preferred. Candidates will however be expected to be able to demonstrate at interview that they are self-motivated and commercially minded, as well as having good interpersonal skills and being able to work effectively in teams.
